Muy — only before adjectives and adverbs — Muy means "very" and is invariable. It can only precede an adjective or another adverb: Es muy alto. Habla muy despacio. It can never precede a noun — use mucho/a/os/as instead: Hay mucha gente, NOT hay muy gente.

Mucho as adverb and as adjective — Mucho as an adverb (after a verb) is invariable: Trabaja mucho. Come mucho. As an adjective (before a noun) it agrees in gender and number: mucho tiempo, mucha agua, muchos libros, muchas personas.

Muy vs mucho with bien and mal — You can say muy bien and muy mal because bien/mal are adverbs — and muy modifies adverbs. But mucho collocates differently: Me gusta mucho (I like it a lot — mucho after the verb). ¡Muy bien! (Very good!) — this is an exclamation with an adverb.
