📌
Two plural rules: -s or -es — Nouns ending in a vowel add -s: libro → libros, mesa → mesas, café → cafés. Nouns ending in a consonant add -es: ciudad → ciudades, árbol → árboles, mes → meses. A few nouns ending in a stressed vowel also take -es: israelí → israelíes.
🔧
Spelling changes in the plural — Some consonant changes are needed to preserve pronunciation: -z → -ces: vez → veces, lápiz → lápices, pez → peces. Nouns ending in an unstressed syllable + -s don't change: el lunes → los lunes, el paraguas → los paraguas (same in plural).
💡
Accent changes in the plural — Adding a syllable shifts the stress pattern, so some nouns gain or lose a written accent: nación → naciones (accent lost — stress naturally on -nes), joven → jóvenes (accent added — stress must stay on jo-). Check the stress after pluralising and add or remove the accent accordingly.
