Por — exchange and durationPor marks exchange or substitution (Lo compré por veinte euros. Te lo cambio por el mío) and duration in the past (Estudié por dos horas). These uses have no equivalent with para.

Para — deadlines and time limitsPara with time expressions marks a deadline or endpoint: Lo necesito para el viernes. ¿Puede estar listo para las tres? Don't confuse this with duration (por) — para sets the limit, por describes the span.

Por for passive agent — In passive constructions, the agent (the one doing the action) is introduced by por: El libro fue escrito por Cervantes. La ventana fue rota por el viento. This is one of the clearest diagnostic uses of por vs para.
