Prepositions of time 1

A — at a specific time; en — within a period — A marks clock times and specific moments: a las tres, a medianoche, al amanecer. En marks periods, months, seasons, and years: en enero, en verano, en 2010, en el siglo XIX. A simple rule: if you can put a clock hand on it, use a; if it's a span of time, use en.

Por and en for duration — Por + time = for a length of time (how long it lasted): Estudié por dos horas. En + time = in/within (how quickly it was done): Lo terminé en dos horas. The same phrase in English ("in two hours") maps to two different Spanish prepositions depending on the meaning.

Desde, hasta, de…a — time ranges — Desde = since/from (a point in time): Trabajo desde las ocho. Hasta = until: Trabajo hasta las seis. De…a = from…to (a range): De lunes a viernes, de nueve a cinco. Combine them: Trabajo desde las nueve hasta las seis.
