Subject, direct, and indirect — three types of pronoun — Spanish has three main sets of personal pronouns used in a clause. Subject pronouns (yo, tú, él) — often omitted. DOPs (lo, la, me, te) — replace the direct object. IOPs (le, me, te, nos) — replace the indirect object. All three can appear in one sentence: Yo te lo doy.
🔧
Reflexive pronouns — a fourth set to watch — Reflexive pronouns (me, te, se, nos, os, se) overlap in form with IOPs but have a different function: they show the subject acting on itself. Context distinguishes them: Me ducho (I shower myself — reflexive) vs Me llamas (you call me — IOP/DOP). The verb meaning usually makes it clear.
💡
When pronouns stack: the fixed order — If multiple pronouns appear before a verb, the order is: reflexive/IOP + DOP: se lo, me la, te los. They never appear in any other order. With an affirmative command: attach them in the same order: melo, cuéntamelo. With a negative command: keep the same order but place them before the verb.
