📚 Quick grammar review
📌
Ser and estar in both past tenses — Both verbs can appear in the preterite or imperfect, with different meanings each time. Ser imperfect: era (was — ongoing characteristic). Ser preterite: fue (was — an event: La fiesta fue genial). Estar imperfect: estaba (was — ongoing state). Estar preterite: estuvo (was — at a specific time/place).
🔧
Fue vs era — the key contrastEra describes what something was like as an ongoing background quality: Era muy simpático (He was very friendly — in general). Fue marks the event as complete or describes it as a single occurrence: La reunión fue aburrida (The meeting was boring — over and done). Use era for descriptions, fue for events.
💡
Estuvo vs estaba — location and stateEstaba = was (ongoing state or location): Cuando llegué, estaba en casa. Estuvo = was (for a specific bounded period): Estuvo enfermo tres días. Estuvo en París una semana. If you can add "for X days/hours" it's usually estuvo; if it's just a background state, use estaba.
