Kitchen and cooking essentials — el tazón (bowl), el quemador (burner/hob), la sartén (frying pan — feminine!), la verdura (vegetable), la receta (recipe), el plato (plate/dish), la carne (meat), el postre (dessert). La sartén is one of the few feminine kitchen words — worth noting.
🔧
Cooking verbs: freír and hervir — Freír (to fry) is irregular: yo frío, tú fríes, él fríe. Hervir (to boil) is a stem-changing verb: yo hiervo, tú hierves, él hierve — but nosotros hervimos (stem stays). Freír la carne en la sartén (Fry the meat in the pan). Hervir las verduras (Boil the vegetables).
💬
Recipe and meal language — Sigue la receta (Follow the recipe). Pon la carne en la sartén caliente (Put the meat in the hot pan). ¿Qué hay de postre? (What's for dessert?). Cocina a fuego lento (Cook on a low heat). El plato del día es pollo con verduras (Today's dish is chicken with vegetables).
